The Consortium of Institutes for Decentralized Wastewater Treatment (CIDWT, www.onsiteconsortium.org) developed a manual for service providers tasked with wastewater treatment in residential areas. Funded in part by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF, www.werf.us), the new manual features an introduction to residential wastewater issues, problems, and solutions. Twelve academic and professional experts contributed to the publication, which was independently reviewed by 35 experts from major universities, professional associations, government agencies, and businesses.

The publication, titled Residential Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems, offers complete descriptions of the O&M service provider role and function, step-by-step instructions for implementing an O&M service program, definitions of terms, checklists, worksheets, illustrations, data tables, learning objectives, reviews of mathematical processes, conversion factors to aid calculations, and references.
