Forgive us if this item comes off as a bit of tooting our own horn, but we just received some news that we want to let you know about. Flow Control magazine (www.flowcontrolnetwork.com) won two awards in the 18th annual APEX (Awards for Publication Excellence, www.apexawards.com) competition — one in the Best Covers category and one in Best Redesigns category — and one award in the Best Covers category of the Tabbies (www.tabpi.org) competition, an annual program recognizing outstanding achievement in editorial and design among business publications worldwide.
All told, there were more than 5,000 nominations for APEX 2006, and awards were issued in 11 major categories and 102 subcategories. The Tabbies program, which is open to English-language publications around the world, received almost 800 nominations. Flow Control was honored in the Best Covers categories in both the APEX and Tabbies competitions for our July 2005 cover, "Bugging Out," which featured the Marvel Comics character Ant-Man. Ant-Man, who rose to modest popularity in early 1960s-era Marvel Comics, was used to illustrate a cover story about a bacteria outbreak in a storage disc slurry filtration process. Flow Control was honored in the Best Redesigns category of the APEX competition for a comparative analysis of its March 2006 issue versus its January 2005 issue.
The APEX competition is based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and the success of the entry — in the opinion of the judges — in achieving overall communications effectiveness and excellence. APEX is organized by Communications Concepts, publisher of Writing that Works and Concepts, training publications for writing, editing, and managing business publications. The APEX 2006 panel of judges included John De Lellis, Concepts editor & publisher, Carolyn Mulford, Concepts senior evaluator for the Publication Evaluation Program and senior writer & editor of Writing That Works, Christine Turner, contributing editor of Writing That Works: The Business Communications Report, and Bill Londino, consulting editor of Writing That Works.
Judges for the Tabbie Awards include editorial and design professionals from business publications around the world, as well as representatives from global business publishing associations. Other Tabbie Award winners include such notable business publications as: CIO, Computerworld, Financial Executive, Forbes Global, InfoWorld, Legal Business, Network World, and PC World.
