The Petroleum Equipment Institute (PEI, www.pei.org) opened the public comment period for the latest draft of its "Recommended Practices for Installation of Bulk Storage Plants" standard. This latest recommended practices draft was produced by PEI’s Bulk Plant Installation Committee and is designed to provide a basic reference that consolidates information concerning the proper construction of new petroleum bulk-storage systems. A printed copy of the draft will be mailed, along with a comment form, to all PEI members in the United States and Canada. Other parties interested in reviewing the draft can download a copy and submit comments directly from PEI’s Web site at www.pei.org/rp800. Comments are due to PEI by Tuesday, Jan. 15.
The information contained in the draft strandard has been assembled from published and unpublished sources provided by equipment manufacturers, contractors, installers, bulk-plant facility owners and regulators. The intent is to describe recommended practices for the construction of new petroleum bulk-storage systems that will maximize system efficiency, prevent surface and groundwater contamination, minimize environmental hazards, reduce safety hazards, and avoid practices that will needlessly increase installation costs.
