Workers at the Guru Gobind Singh Oil Refinery in Bathinda, India rioted and burnt vehicles after two of their men were buried under sand mounds in a work-related accident, according to a report by the Times of India. The trapped persons were laying a pipe in the trench at the time of the incident. It was the second such revolt in the past nine months following worker injuries at the refinery.
As hundreds of labourers, mostly migrants from Bihar, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, attacked the security persons who tried to save the vehicles. Police personnel from four districts of Bathinda, Mansa, Faridkot and Muktar came to the refinery to control the situation.
The Times of India says the problem started in the afternoon when two workers from West Bengal got buried under a sand mound when they were laying a pipe in a trench. When an ambulance in the refinery was trying to transport one of the unconscious persons to the hospital, hundreds of others workers attacked vehicles in the refinery, alleging poor safety measures for the workers.
