(FCI release) — Engineers who require the accurate measurement of gases in large diameter pipes, stacks and ducts will find the MT100 Series Multipoint Thermal Mass Flowmeter from Fluid Components International (FCI) is the solution they need to support a wide variety of harsh processes and to meet air quality regulations set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), European regulatory agencies and others worldwide.

Large diameter pipes and ducts present unique challenges to achieve successful flowmeter installation and performance. Lack of straight-run, distorted flow profiles, low flow rates and wide turndowns rates are common performance challenges for many flow metering technologies. Meter installations can be complicated by difficult access points, single plane platforms, long cable runs, extra mechanical support and exposure to extreme weather.

Furthermore, in many of these applications, the gas being measured can be at high temperatures, sometimes moist and/or contain particulates. These conditions can result in measurement degradation, clogging and fouling, which leads to excessive maintenance or premature failures of many flowmeter technologies. FCI has been providing application-optimized, low-maintenance and cost-effective air/gas flow meter solutions to these problems in large pipes, stacks and ducts for more than three decades.

The MT100 Series Flowmeters combine FCI’s proven thermal sensor technology with state-of-the-art electronics technology in a rugged package. Their temperature-compensated direct mass flow sensor design provides precise, repeatable air/gas flow measurement with low maintenance over a long life in demanding processes under rugged operating conditions to provide a best-in-class, lowest life-cycle cost flow measurement instrument solution.

FCI’s MT100 Series Flowmeters meet demanding industrial installation and application measurement challenges with a unique design that features two to eight flow rate sensing points. Multiple sensors are inserted at various depths within a pipe or duct and their outputs are multiplexed and averaged to determine the flow rate within the process line. The flow sensors can be installed either across a mast or can be inserted at multiple points around the process line in a single plane.

In large stacks, the MT100 Flowmeter’s design configuration flexibility means that the instrument installation can be done at a single platform location to achieve major cost savings over other technologies, such as ultrasonic meters, which require installing transducers at precise offset angles. In particulate-heavy or corrosive stack gases, the MT100 Meters also excel because there are no moving parts, orifices or glass windows to foul or clog.

The precision MT100 Flowmeters measure flow rates over a wide range from 0.25 to 1000 SFPS (0,07 to 305 NMPS) with 100:1 turndown and accuracy of ± 0.75% of reading, ±0.5% of full scale. They are also dual-function and can provide temperature measurement capability from -50 to 850°F (-45 to 454°C), with accuracy of ± 2°F (± 1,1°C).

This flowmeter’s transmitter is both full-featured and rugged. It comes with a choice of output options to interface with virtually any DCS, PLC, SCADA, or recorder. Dual, isolated, high-resolution 4-20mA outputs compliant with Namur NE43, HART (Fieldcomm Group certified), Modbus, 0-1kHz frequency/pulse and a USB port are all included standard. Optionally available are Foundation Fieldbus and Profibus-PA bus communications.

Its best-in-class large color touch-screen LCD readout provides comprehensive process information to users with both analog and digital displays of flow rate, temperature and totalized flow, a user time-base selectable strip-chart of flow rate and sensor status diagnostics. The transmitter’s enclosure is corrosion-resistant stainless steel and carries a NEMA 4X/IP64 rating.

The MT100 Series Flowmeter is available with an impressive array of optional air quality pollution monitoring certifications. These include a U.S. EPA-compliant Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) package, which also meets the requirements for the Continuous Emissions Rate Monitoring System (CERMS) applications; and an AMS Compliant (EN 15267, QAL1) option too.

The MT100 CEMS option includes an automated and on-demand self-checking of calibration drift (CD) and sensor interference. The results of the CEMS tests are presented as a simple pass or fail message on the LCD readout. The CEMS option also includes two relay outputs for connection to external devices, one to signal a test in progress and the other to signal a fail-test mode.

All MT100 meters comply with IEC safety directives for EMC and LVD, and they carry CE marking. Optionally available for process installations with hazardous, potentially explosive gases and/or dust, MT100 meters can be ordered with FM/FMc, ATEX/UKEX, IECEx, or EAC agency approvals for Division II/Zone 2.
