Alabama, Mobile County — A Hotbed of Industrial Development
Alabama has been a hotbed of economic development, scoring several large-scale grassroots projects and generating $14 billion in industrial development, according to a report by Industrial Info Resources. ThyssenKrupp”s $4 billion steel mill in Washington County is among the more notable recent projects in Alabama, which was awarded to the state, in part, due to its access to port facilities for importing raw materials.
Mobile County, which is home to more than 90 major industrial plants, has a long history of industrial development. With access to U.S. Gulf Coast shipping lanes and close proximity to regional oil and gas reserves, Mobile County has a number of oil & gas production, terminal and transmission industry, chemical processing, and metals & minerals facilities. These plants spend millions of dollars every year on capital and maintenance projects.
According to Industrial Info”s North America Industrial Project Database, there are 45 industrial projects totaling more than $1 billion in Mobile County.

Industrial development in Mobile County is led by the Oil & Gas Production Industry, with nine projects totaling $636 million, and the Metals & Minerals Industry, with four projects totaling $267 million.
