Industry Update: Gas turbine sales on the rise

Aug. 31, 2016

Global gas turbine sales will reach $87 billion next year.

Combined cycle generators to account for most new gas turbines in 2017

Global gas turbine sales will reach $87 billion next year, according to The McIlvaine Company. More than $30 billion in new systems will be installed in the U.S. Designed for combined cycle operation, most of the new systems will include a steam turbine and heat recovery steam generator.

Gas turbine growth will largely be driven by movement away from coal-fired power plants and the availability of inexpensive gas in the U.S. Gas has remained popular in spite of rapid solar and wind energy growth.

Zion Market Research published a report forecasting the gas turbine market will be valued at $20.5 billion by 2021, growing at a compound annual growth rate of about 4 percent.

Major drivers of the growth are increasing efficiency and durability of the technology. The heavy-duty turbine segment led the market in 2015, with the Asia-Pacific region leading the way.

GE collaboration improves turbine technology, reduces cost

A new digital solution developed by Tata Consultancy Services and GE brings connects turbine manufacturing to the industrial internet to save time and money.

Smart LEDs join with GE’s Predix operating system to provide analytics that can improve the manufacturing process. GE Power’s gas turbine manufacturing plant in Greenville, South Carolina, piloted the technology, which analyzes temperatures on the metal turbine parts during assembly, improving quality monitoring and reducing wait time between operations.
