The sales of air pollution control equipment and consumables along with air purification equipment for buildings and plant ventilating systems will exceed $44 billion in 2013, according to the latest forecast in the report Air Pollution Management, published by the McIlvaine Company.

East Asia will account for 47 percent of the total. The construction of a large number of new coal-fired power plants is one reason for the large East Asia market share, the report says. Cement, pulp & paper, iron, and steel are all industries that will also contribute to the East Asia revenues.

The rapid expansion of commercial and residential buildings in East Asia is another reason because many of these buildings are incorporating forced air heating and cooling. All will have particulate filters and many will also have an ability to adsorb odors and gaseous pollutants, McIlvaine reports.

The sales of filter media, nozzles, catalysts, scrubbers, precipitators, fabric filters, vessels and ductwork are all included in these totals. There are a number of filter media manufacturers who supply media for industrial as well as residential filters.

Large scrubbers are used to capture SO2 from power plant stacks. Small scrubbers are used to eliminate odors from food frying. Many different industries use scrubbers to remove acid gases, odors and particulate.

These forecasts include the catalysts used for volatile organic compound (VOC) destruction as well as for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems used in power, cement and chemical plants. The forecasts do not include the catalyst used in automobiles, which are included in a separate McIlvaine report.
