Sales of water and wastewater treatment chemicals globally will be just under $24 billion in 2012, according to the latest forecast in the Water and Wastewater Treatment Chemicals: World Market report by the McIlvaine Company.

East Asia will be the largest purchasing region as it rapidly expands its power, wastewater and water infrastructure.
Corrosion inhibitors will be the leading product category followed by organic flocculants and scale inhibitors, according to the report. These chemicals are being consumed in much larger numbers in China as the country expands its coal-fired boiler capacity by 30,000 MW/year. The U.S. fleet is 300,000 MW. McIlvaine reports China is increasing its coal-fired boiler chemical purchases over the next five years by an amount equivalent to 50 percent of the entire U.S. purchases. By 2020, chemical purchases for coal-fired boilers in China will be 300 percent of the U.S. volume.
